Cinnamon Zeylanicum vs Cassia
Be aware of the difference between the two most common types of cinnamon found in the market. Cassia cinnamon, often sold in regular supermarkets, comes from the Cinnamomum cassia tree and naturally contains higher levels of coumarin (about 1–5%). While coumarin is a naturally occurring compound, consuming it in large amounts over time may not be suitable for everyone. Research suggests that excessive intake can place stress on the liver and may interact with certain medications, especially blood thinners. Because of this, even small daily amounts of cassia cinnamon can potentially exceed recommended safe intake levels.
In contrast, Ceylon cinnamon—known as “True Cinnamon”—is the premium and safer variety. It is native to Sri Lanka and is derived from the Cinnamomum verum tree. Ceylon cinnamon contains only trace amounts of coumarin (typically less than 0.1%), making it a much better choice for regular, long-term use. It is also known for its delicate aroma and naturally sweet, refined flavour.
By choosing Ceylon cinnamon, you enjoy the authentic taste of true cinnamon while minimising concerns related to high coumarin intake found in cassia varieties. For everyday wellness and peace of mind, Ceylon cinnamon remains the preferred and trusted choice.
